Two other things do happen, and both are below — the language you picked is kept in your browser, and when you open the front door of the site your browser asks an outside service which country your IP address is in, so the page can open in English or in Spanish without making you choose.
This site does not set cookies
Not ours, and none belonging to anyone else. No cookie is created when you arrive, while you browse, or when you send a form. What the rest of this page explains is the one thing that is stored in your browser and the one request that leaves it.
What it does keep in your browser
One entry called “ks.lang” holding two letters — “en” or “es” — so the site opens in the language you picked last time. It is saved in your browser’s local storage. It never leaves your device, it is not sent to us with any request, and it cannot be used to recognise you. It is also the first thing the site looks at: if it is there, the country lookup described below does not happen at all. Clearing this site’s data in your browser removes it; nothing breaks, the site simply reads the language from the address bar, which is where the language really lives.
Why that is not a cookie
A cookie travels to a server with every request you make, which is exactly what makes it useful for following people around. Local storage does not travel anywhere: it sits in your browser, and only this page can read it.
The one request that leaves: which country your IP is in
When you open the front door of this site — the address with no language after it — your browser asks geojs.io, a service run by someone else, which country your IP address belongs to. What comes back is a two-letter code, and it is used for exactly one thing: deciding whether to open the page in English or in Spanish. Then it is discarded. This deserves saying plainly rather than burying it: your IP address is personal data, and that provider sees it. The request goes straight from your browser to them and never passes through our servers, so we do not receive your IP address, do not store it and do not log it. Neither we nor they set a cookie for this. If you would rather it did not happen, open a language address directly (/en or /es) or pick a language once — from then on the site uses your saved choice and asks nobody. And if the service does not answer within about a second, nothing is retried: the site falls back to the language your own browser asks for and carries on.
What we have chosen not to do
There is no web analytics on this site, no advertising measurement, no social network buttons that phone home and no session recording. Nothing follows you from page to page or from one visit to the next. The country lookup above is not an exception to that: it is asked once, it answers with two letters, and it knows nothing about what you do afterwards. All of this is a decision, not an oversight, and it is why this page is short. If any of it changes, this page changes on the same day and the date at the top will say so.
